First, you need a copy of all three reports. Once a year you can get these reports at no cost. Ordering them from the bureaus will cost you a small fee though.

Order the reports by mail, by phone or online.

Do not contact the bureaus for your free report.

FACTA offers the reports to you. Any other offers from other companies will require a subscription for a fee. Credit scores can be purchased separately but are not included with the free report.

Not all lenders or creditors report to the same bureaus. The bureaus also do not share information. Each one may contain different information about you. Having all three reports will provide you with a better picture of your credit history.

Read over your reports and become familiar with them. Mark whatever it is that needs to be repaired.

Knowing what creditors say about you is important so order these reports at least once a year.

It is normal for names to be spelled wrong. Make sure it is an incorrect spelling and not someone else’s information.

The summary found in the reports lists types of accounts, quantity of accounts that are current or past due and open or closed accounts. The balance, any public records and inquiries will also be included.

The account history area is more detailed. Here is where all information pertaining to the account will be found. The information includes: The creditor name, account type, account number, responsibility, payment amount, date opened, balance, date reported, credit limit, high balance, loan amount, high credit, remarks, past due, payment history and status.

Any information that is not correct needs to be disputed. This includes: accounts that do not belong to you, payments that were not late but reported as late, past due accounts, charge-offs, collections and maxed out accounts.

When you receive your report, instructions for disputing information will be listed. Send a copy of the report with the incorrect information marked with your dispute.

Bring your credit rating up by bringing all accounts current or showing as paid. This impacts your score dramatically.

Pay the open accounts first. Any that has been charged off need to be paid in full. Try to make payment arrangements with the collection agency if they will work with you.

The amount of your debt when compared to the total amount of credit makes up 30% of the credit score. Maxing out your cards costs your points on your credit score so bring those cards down below their limit.

When you have managed to get the negative items taken care of, start trying to have good information added. It may be necessary to reestablish your credit. To do so, you will have to open another account. If you get denied a credit card, try applying for a card from a department store. If that does not work, obtain a secure card.

It is important that you do not let good accounts slip to take carry of bad accounts.
